01Why this one

The piece you never have to take off

Most jewellery lives in a dish by the door. You put it on for something, and you take it off before the shower, before the gym, before the sea. This one does not work that way: it is waterproof, it does not tarnish and it does not mind heat or sweat. It goes on and it stays on.

The necklace worn above a knitted neckline

A millimetre of chain is a deliberate choice. It is thin enough to sit flat and quiet under a shirt, and bright enough to catch the light at an open collar. It does not compete with anything else you are wearing — it just finishes it.

A chain at the collarbone is read before the shirt is. It is the detail people notice without deciding to, and the one they remember afterwards without being able to say why.

02The make

Why the steel matters more than the shine

316L is the grade of stainless steel used where corrosion is not allowed to happen — in surgical instruments and in marine fittings. That is the whole reason this chain can be worn in the shower and in the sea without changing colour. Plated jewellery looks identical in a photograph and gives itself away within a season, at the clasp and at the back of the neck, where the plating goes first. There is no plating here to wear through.

The links are flat rather than round, which is why the chain lies against the skin instead of rolling and turning over on itself through the day. At the end is a lobster clasp — a sprung hook you can open with one hand and that will not work itself loose the way a spring-ring does.

03The value

Why this costs what it costs

Almost everything sold at this length and this price is plated — a base metal under a microscopic layer of something brighter. It costs a fraction to make and it is indistinguishable on a screen. The difference arrives three months later, when the clasp goes dull and a green line appears at the back of the neck. Solid steel has nothing to wear through, which is why it is the more expensive thing to make and the cheaper thing to own.

The full necklace, shown laid out

What is not in the price is the part that has nothing to do with the necklace: the counter, the display case, the distributor taking a cut on the way. We sell direct, so the retail margin that normally sits on top of a piece like this is simply not there. The steel is the expensive part, and the steel is what you are paying for.

  • Sold direct — no retail margin stacked on the price
  • Solid 316L steel, not plated base metal
  • Nothing to re-plate, polish or replace

05Questions

Where will 55 cm sit on me?

It is a single length, cut to fall just below the collarbone on most people — low enough to show at an open collar, high enough to disappear under a buttoned shirt.

Can I shower and swim in it?

Yes. It is waterproof and rustproof, and it is unaffected by heat or sweat. That is the point of 316L rather than plating.

Will it turn my skin green?

No. That happens when plating wears through to a base metal underneath. This is solid stainless steel, so there is no plating and nothing to wear through.

Does it need polishing?

No. It is colourfast. A wipe with a dry cloth is the whole routine.

Is it a good gift?

One of the easiest there is. A single length means no size to get wrong, and it arrives ready to wear.

What if it is not right?

Returns are free and global. Send it back unworn and we will exchange it or refund you.

How quickly does it ship?

It is held in stock here. Processing and order verification typically take 1 to 3 business days before dispatch.

Limited run

One length, one finish, one run

There is no second size to fall back on and no other colourway to take instead. When this run is gone the page stays up and the button stops working, and a restock is weeks away. A piece this simple is also the easiest one to sell out, because there is nothing about it that anybody has to think twice about.

Put it in the bag while it is still here. Returns are free and global, so the decision you are actually making is whether to have the option at all.
